International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste
September 29 is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the issue of food waste and its impact on the environment, food security, and the economy.
Every year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, which is equal to 3 billion tonnes of food per year, or enough to feed 2 billion people. The amount of food wasted each year is enough to feed all the hungry people in the world 4 times over.
Also, food waste is a waste of resources. It takes a lot of water, land, and energy to produce food. When food is wasted, all of these resources are wasted as well.
By making small changes in our own lives, we can make a big difference in reducing food waste.
