1. INTRODUCTION IJSO: 

International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a competition in science for students who are fifteen years or younger on 31 st December of the competition year. IJSO aims to promote interest in science among school students, exposing them to problem solving, critical thinking and experimentation. Over the years IJSO aims to positively impact science and mathematics education at school level. 

IJSO is held in the first week of December of every year, in different countries. Currently around 50 member countries participate every year. 

The academic competitions of the IJSO includes challenging tests in topics of science, both as theory questions and practical tasks. The tests are designed to address students' understanding of concepts, and their ability to apply concepts to the situations described in the tests. 

An important aim of the Olympiads is for young people to experience different cultures and to bring about interactions between students from across the world. The Olympiads thus have a potential to promote global peace and understanding.

  • To challenge, stimulate and encourage gifted students to further develop their talents in Natural Sciences. 

  • To create friendship and relationships among students around the world from an early age.

  • To enhance and develop international contacts in the Natural Sciences. 

  • To promote future scientific collaboration. 

  • To encourage the formation of friendships within the scientific community. 

  • To offer the opportunity to compare the syllabi and educational trends in science education within the participating countries.

  1. PREPARATION GUIDE IJSO 

  1. 6 students will be selected from each city as in previous years. These students will participate in the exam to be held in one of the Stirling Schools in Erbil or Duhok on August 15, 2024. According to the exam results, the best 6 students will form the Iraq Team and participate in the IJSO international competition to be held in Romania on December 1, 2024. 

  1. It is recommended that 6 students to be selected from each city by June 20, 2024, before the holiday. If desired, the city can bring 6 extra students from public schools or other private schools. (only 6 students will be selected from each city). 

  1. IJSO preparatory groups (School Groups) will be determined as of August 15, 2024. Schools can determine their team by students’ overall marks or by doing a selection test.  

  1. City Selection to determine the 6 students for the final can be done on 13 June 2024, Thursday. 

  1. The IJSO final exam will be held in Erbil or Duhok on August 15, 2024, Thursday and the Iraq team of 6 will be formed. 

  1. Total 180 minutes are given for the 60 multiple-choice paper-based test questions. 

  1. Students will be selected only based on the results of the IJSO exams.  

  1. Students selected for the Iraq team will complete the official online registration between 15-25 August 2024. (further explanation for registration is given below) 

  1. IJSO studies will start after the selection for the country team by 15 August and will end as of the last week of November (2023).  

  1. 1 - 10 December 2024 WORLD IJSO exam will be held in Romania. (IJSO 2024 program will be over). 

  1. Each city will prepare 10 biology, 10 chemistry and 10 physics questions from the topics chosen in our previous IJSO meetings and send them to [email protected] with their answers. The exam questions prepared by the cities should reach [email protected]  on August 5, 2024. 

  1. For IJSO Romania 6 students and 1 teacher will be selected. Up to 3 teachers can be selected to participate. 

  1. Online Lessons will be organized for the City Finalists (October – August)  

  1. Online Lessons will be organized for the Iraq Team (August-November) along with hands-on experiments.  

  1. Test materials will be delivered to teachers through Education Coordinators and DPAs.  

 

  1. REGISTRATION PROCESS (15-25 August): 

Students' (NAME)- (FATHER'S NAME)- (GRANDFATHER'S NAME) must be registered using CAPITAL LETTERS and ENGLISH characters as written in their passports along with (email), (extra e-mail), (Gender), (BIRTH DATE), (GRADE), (CLASS), (PHONE NUMBER), (VALID PASSPORT NUMBER), and (SCHOOL NAME),  

Selection Criteria: Students will be chosen based on their performance in the final exam, with six students being selected for the Iraq Team. 

Passport Requirement: Students must have a passport ready by August 15. If a student lacks a passport by this date, they will be automatically eliminated, and the next student in line will be considered. 

Passport Validity: The student's passport must be valid for at least 12 months, starting from December 10, 2024. 

Required Documents for Students: 

 

  • Passport-size photo (high quality, not exceeding 2 MB, and must be green card quality). 

  • Scanned version of the first page of the passport (scanning by phone is not acceptable). 

  • A written document on A4 paper containing the student's home address, phone number, and the phone numbers of both parents.

  1. SUMMER COURSES: 

  • Summer Courses will be organized for the Iraq Team in August along with hands-on experiments. 

  • Due to the intensity of teachers, Lessons will be online taken from abroad (Science Subject PLC Group decision). 

  • Courses are planned as 4 lessons per day for 6 days a week on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. (The lessons will be recorded). 

  • The courses are from physics, chemistry and biology lessons and their total duration will be around 120 to 160 hours. 

  • 50 USD per student will be paid for these courses. 

 

  1. FEES:  

Selection and the Final tests are free of charge for all the participants. 

Applicant’s Expenses: Ticket, visa, travel insurance, and personal expenses etc. will be born by the students unless a favorable decision is taken by the board and other expenses mentioned below are covered by the Stirling Schools.  
Visa and Ticket Expenses for Teachers: Teachers are required to cover their expenses for visa and ticket. 

Observers and Relatives: If individuals want to attend as observers or students' relatives, they need to provide the necessary documents. Parents and observers should be aware of the associated expenses, including $1500 for observer fees per person, along with additional costs such as ticket, visa, and health insurance. 

 

**The Stirling schools guarantee to cover expenses such as the Olympiad Annual Fee, Online Course Fees, Materials, Print and Stationary, Corporate Awards and Certificates. Any remaining expenses will be determined by the Board following the selection of the Iraq Team. This approach ensures that above mentioned essential costs are guaranteed, providing the team with necessary resources, while decisions about other expenses will be collectively made by the Board for added flexibility.  

 

  • Deadline for payment: As soon as the visa is issued the Tickets must be issued by the parents.  

  • Deadline for filing personal information of participants: 15-30 August / After this date new names of students, parents or teachers cannot be added.  

  • Deadline for IJSO Final Process: 25 November 

 

  1. AWARDS & CERTIFICATES: 

15 August Final Selection Exam: 

Certificate of Participation will be emailed to all the participants.  

IJSO INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION  

  • The 1st 10% of participants 1st PLACE, (Gold Medal & Certificate) /  

  • The 2nd 20% of participants 2nd PLACE, (Silver Medal & Certificate)  

  • The 3rd 30% of participants 3rd PLACE, (Bronze Medal & Certificate) 

  • Participating students, teachers and observers will receive CERTIFICATE of PARTICIPATION.  

 

*** Schools should not promise students any awards other than those announced by the organizing firm (IJSO) but if they do so, they must budget it on their own before announcing.
